Social democrats, who often repeat the lie equating fascism and communism, are more than happy to give a few token statements, as they often do, but in reality will watch and even make deals with fascists.
Social democracy relies on Imperialism to generate profits and export poverty to the developing world while reaping the rewards gained from exploiting entire nations.
Here we can see the working class of Ireland recognise their position, they can see very clearly the problems capitalism produces, namely, the health and housing crises. Here Sinn Féin had the opportunity to exploit the gap in anti-austerity politics that Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil structurally support.
Some are calling the crisis a ‘cleanse’ of the planet, that because it disproportionately affects older people, it’s the Earth’s revenge against ‘boomers’ and that humanity really needed to ‘check itself’ or let the planet breathe.
It exists almost as if to affirm that capitalism is the only viable option, and feeds into the western idea of restricting socialism to its most minimal form. Furthermore, the Nordic welfare model cannot be presented as an alternative to both socialism and capitalism, it works mainly as a form of appeasement, keeping the working class quiet while still supporting free market capitalism.
Self proclaimed socialists such as Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Corbyn have seen moderate success in electoral politics which has opened up a space for socialists to introduce their ideas to a much larger audience.
Almost 30 years after the fall of the USSR, it’s become quite clear that our welfare state was little more than pacifying piecemeal for the masses of Europe and the US – the Covid-19 Pandemic has placed all eyes on this reality.
We urge any of your members reading this to come forward. We will believe them, just as many other comrades in the Irish left will. The majority of socialists in this country completely reject misogyny, predatory behaviour and the cynicism coming from senior members that punish and demean members for standing up against abuse.
Ireland is internationally labeled as a corporate tax haven. Apple owes the 26 county state 13bn. These profits have been made by these tax breaks and now it’s the Irish people who again have to pick up the pieces as they fire their workers at the first opportunity.
Nobody’s voice was above any other. Our mandate comes from ourselves, open debate and discussion drawing us to unity. I challenge the reader to find a political organisation on our island that operates in so democratic a manner.
